It appears to be true! I pulled the 2008 full season numbers for some punch and judy hitters (The-RIOT, Ichiro, & Polanco). Not to say these guys can't hit but despite The-RIOT & Ichiro's start to 2009 are surely not power hitters.
Again I used the scoring in my league (single =1, double =2, triple = 3, HR =4, Run =1, walk = 1, RBI = 1, SB = 2) and sorted by fantasy points/game. Then I took the % of points scored in the first 1/4, first 1/2 and first 3/4 of all games.
Slap hitters:
The-RIOT - 59/87/102 (FPTS from top 1/4, top 1/2, and top 3/4 of all games)
Ryan was a consistent product on my team last year scoring >15 points nearly every week it seemed. These numbers (similar to Pujols 58/86/99 breakdown but with alot less power/points distributed) lead to this type of consistent scoring
Polanco - 64/90/102
Placido Polanco (not Enrico Pollazo from Naked Gun fame) has similar numbers. He appears alittle more streaky with a higher percentage of points in the first quartile but all in all around the same.
Ichiro - 56/87/100
A model of consistency Ichiro again has a Pujolsian breakdwon in points - a testiment to his consistent point scoring abilities.
BOTTOM LINE:
ALL Fantasy players evaluated - Sluggers & Slap Hitters - scored >50% of their fantasy points in the top 25% of their games. Some sluggers score closer to 80% of their points in the top quartile of their games.
Just another reason to LOVE Pujols in fantasy baseball - especially H2H. He puts up MONSTER numbers like a slugger with the consistent distribution of a slap hitter.
